5770 Sukkah Update #1

And another thing! The holiday of Sukkot starts tomorrow night and we actually have most of our sukkah already up and sort of decorated.

The dog is not a decoration. She's just there to show the scale. Or maybe to wait for the food that she knows will appear sooner or later (she is next to the table). Of course, you have to remember that she's a Corgi and kind of short.

Tomorrow we finish the sukkah and eat out there. Tonight the local weather pundits are predicting a freeze. Fortunately, the Wizard and I bought some outdoor heaters last year. The heaters won't do much for what's left of the tomatoes (though down comforters have been known to work), but they will keep our guests from shivering. I hope.

Terribly Remiss

Life has been normal, which is to say that there never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them. (Thank you, Jim Croce!) And if, like me, you haven't yet found those things you want to do, life is even more complicated.

So today I made blueberry muffins.

Blueberry muffins seemed like a good response to some of the things that have been going on here lately. There are a few left, so if you're hungry, come on over!

In the Jewish year, this is a time for reflection. As I reflected, without the aid of mirrors, it occurred to me that I need to put "update blog" on my calendar at least one or two days a week. Now all I have to do is figure out which one or two days those would be.

Sunday might be good, particulary if I can get to the computer early in the day after walking the dogs. Monday .... less so. Tuesday? Nope, already have a couple of once-a-week commitments that day. Wednesday, maybe. Thursday, like Monday has a few potential issues. Friday and Saturday are right out.

So that leaves Sunday and Wednesday. Both are in the past for this week and next Sunday is the second day of Sukkot (and thus a Jewish holiday when I won't be on the computer). So, next Sunday evening and sometime on Wednesday I will post updates. I've got a big backlog, so there's no lack of subject material.

And while you wait, breathless with anticipation, for Sunday night, here's a visual quiz. One of these things is not like the others....

What a difference a day makes!

Despite the lingering twinges from my ribs and the fairly constant pain in my knee, I did manage to work on the kitchen today.

It's not perfect, but the counters are almost clear, the desk has been moved, the recycling is in the recycling bins, and the dishes are even washed! What you can't see is the pile of vegetables from the garden that I just didn't have the stamina to deal with today.

I also created a pile today:

That is about 10 loads of laundry, mostly sheets and blankets and other bedding left behind by Future Vet and Media Guy. Tomorrow we will fold and put away. And do something with zucchini and tomatoes. And get ready for Shabbat.

I do not make this stuff up ...

It's been a busy summer.

When last I wrote, Future Vet had more-or-less just returned from his year in a far-away country. Then he went on a college trip to La-La Land where he found the school of his dreams. Most of the rest of the summer was spent getting him (and his brother Media Guy, who is transferring to the same school) ready to push out of the nest.

As I wrote, it's been a busy summer.

Especially since the Drama Queen decided that she would also go back to school full time, which meant cutting back on her work hours, which meant she could no longer afford her apartment and her car payment, which meant she moved back into the house. Out one door and in another. I should put up revolving doors.

Be that as it may, I just returned from dropping Future Vet and Media Guy off in La-La Land. Maybe one of these days I will hear from them. Media Guy had to move out of his bedroom so that the Drama Queen could move in. Also, Sports Nut moved out of his bedroom so that the Drama Queen could move in. (Yes, she is occupying two bedrooms, but it's all good -- they have a connecting door, a private bathroom, and a door to the outside.) There was a lot of painting and refurbishing going on to make all that happen.

But that's not what I wanted to blog about today because none of that is in aid of getting out of Dodge. What I want to report is Negative Progress. This is a Bad Thing.

Sports Nuts (who came along to help drive and to visit Disneyland) and I returned from dropping off his brothers to find .... well, see for yourselves:

That's the living room, which doubles as my office. The side with my desk is so unfortunate, I refuse to take a picture. When Media Guy emptied out his closets, lots of STUFF made its way in here. Drama Queen's move added a few more things. There's barely room for the dogs to move around.

Then there's the kitchen:

I'll admit SOME of that is things that Sports Nut and I brought in from the car after our trip, but I assure you that we didn't have a desk in the car.

The rest of the house isn't much better. Where do we eat in this dining room?

And there are TWO extra leaves in the dining table right now. Just more CFS (convenient flat surface) on which to pile things.

There's more, but I won't go into it right now. Piles of dirty laundry (some of it in actual laundry baskets) everywhere. An enormous stack of boxes of things taken from Media Guy's bedroom in the front hall. DVDs piled up all over the family room. (Okay, I left them there before I took off with my three sons, but still.... )

Today's mission is the kitchen. I'll check in later.

In the meantime, we are wondering if this is the reason our birdfeeders have been less busy lately:
Yes, folks, we feed all kinds of birds at our feeding stations.

So Close, but no shower

I have given up on trying to catch up. The only thing to do is to forge ahead. Maybe some of the in-between stuff will make an appearance when it's appropriate. Maybe not.

At least I have an excuse from a doctor (see below).

I got all excited today -- the people who were making a new custom shower door for our new bathroom shower called to say that they finally had the piece that they had to special order and could they please come over right now and install the shower door. Who could say no to an offer like that? Not me!

However, three hours later, the installers came down to tell me that they were still missing a piece and that they would come back on Friday. So here's the almost-shower:

The door that is supposed to go in that big open space is resting against the opposite wall. I cannot tell you how tired I am of taking showers downstairs. Though I do have to admit that the downstairs tub shower is much nicer now than it was before we started this project.

This bathroom project, the one that was going to be finished in two weeks, is now about to enter its third month.

So... in my last post, a little over 2 weeks ago, I mentioned that I fell while working in the front yard with Sports Nut. I fell on a Tuesday and by Saturday night, I was trolling the internet because I had a strange (and painful) feeling that I had broken a rib when I fell. Sure enough, on Monday when I finally got x-rayed, I had broken not one, but TWO ribs. Oh, joy. At least it gives me an excuse to continue making the young men in the household do most of the grunt work.

Here's where I fell:

I'm including that picture because when I say that I fell and broke my ribs while pulling weeds, people are skeptical, at best. I started out at the top of the driveway, lost my balance, and ended up halfway down the driveway between the proverbial rock (the retaining wall) and a hard place (my car). All in a day's work, I suppose.

Unfortunately, Sports Nut and I have not gotten back to the project that preceded the fall, namely making a path across the part of the front yard that everybody walks on anyway. It's sort of one-third to one-half of the way done.

And yes, all of this is in aid of leaving Dodge. The front yard is such a disaster that we figured anything we could do would be an improvement.

The bathroom off of Media Guy's bedroom is finished to the point that we actually started painting it today. Future Vet and Sports Nut worked really hard -- they scraped and painted the ceiling, filled in some holes, and have painted 3 of the 4 walls. Since the fourth wall holds the vanity and toilet, they wisely put that off until the morning. Still, progress is being made.

The color doesn't show up too well, but the woodwork in this bathroom is currently purple. In the other downstairs bathroom, the woodwork is pink. I suspect the previous owners had daughters rather than sons. We're going with more neutral colors. The paint in this bathroom is a very pale gray, with dark gray wooodwork (which actually matches the woodwork in the adjoining bedroom). The other downstairs bathroom will be mostly green, which is handy since we put pale green tile around the tub.

And now ... since it is the first of July, here's a garden update. From our smaller vegetable plot, we are already picking tomatoes and basil. There are some green beans coming in and the romaine lettuce looks yummy. The cucumbers are vining and flowering, but we haven't seen any fruit yet.

In the large vegetable plot, the corn is not quite as high as an elephant's eye, but it's higher than any of the dog's eyes. As long as the dogs are standing with all four feet on the ground, that is. We have already picked and eaten zucchini and yellow squash. And as of yesterday morning, we have one cantelope ripening on the vine, with more to come.

We put in a few more perennials, another attempt to make the yard look less barren. They seem to be settling in nicely.

The flowers in the back yard, however, have suffered. The dogs figured out how to circumvent the fence and have had fun digging at and laying on the flowers. Poor flowers.

And the fruit hasn't done as well as we had hoped. Two of the blueberry bushes gave up the ghost, so we put in a couple more. Only one is looking healthy right now. Blueberries may not be a good match for the climate in Dodge. The cauliflower that Sports Nut wanted to plant is very leafy, but we haven't seen any heads yet. And the strawberry plants look lovely, but we haven't managed to pick any berries yet. We aren't sure what's getting to them before we do. We have a friend who says it may be cockroaches. Having seen the size of the cockroaches around here, she may be right.

We, however, have a different suspect in mind:

Seen here innocently chewing on some of the grass and other greenery that is growing wild in the yard, we know for a fact that this bunny can scuttle under low fences and outrun three determined dogs.

It should be obvious to those who actually read this blog, but I thought I would mention that Future Vet is back from the distant country in which he spent the last year. The Wizard and I picked him up at an airport about a month ago. He was a mere shadow of his former self:

On the way back from the airport, we had to stop and buy him some clothes so that his jeans wouldn't fall off and embarrass the whole family.

And that's all for tonight!

Making Progress

Today I started to get back into the decrapification process. The garage was, once again, getting out of control.
Empty cardboard boxes everywhere! Since I fell down yesterday while dealing with the front yard (more on that another day) and I hurt pretty much all over but especially on my right side, I conned ... uh, persuaded ... Future Vet to start dealing with the cardboard. And I got Media Guy to help pull out some things to be Freecycled.

Future Vet did a great job of preparing cardboard to be taken to the recycling center:
Now we only have another 20 or 30 boxes to go!

And Media Guy and I put together a list of about 20 things to be listed on Freecycle. I was gonna do that tonight, but the dogs are howling to come in so I guess that's a task for tomorrow.

Not only did we get a good start on taming the garage yet again, Future Vet came up with a space-saving way to store his DVD collection -- and eventually, the family's collection as well. We bought some slim DVD cases, scanned the covers, shrank the spine information and put the covers back together, then printed them out so that he could have "real" DVD covers. The results are promising:
The tall stack on the right is the empty standard-size DVD cases. The smaller stack on the left is his complete collection of movies, taken out of those cases. Now he proposes to do the same with the family's collection of movies -- all three bookcases worth. Should be a fun project.

We had only minor negative progress today. In our search for Future Vet's biology and chemistry text books, which got packed away while he was out of sight and out of mind, we stopped by the storage locker. We didn't find the text books, but somehow or other, these objects made it home with us:

Super Soakers! Just what we needed! I think Future Vet plans to take them off to college this fall. But more on all that later.

Time Just Flies ... and so do I

Well, I'm flying to the Boston this weekend, at any rate. With the help of Continental Airlines. The idea is to pick up my baby boy, Future Vet, and buy him some new clothes since he lost so much weight while living in a distant country this past year.

Time flies because it's been two weeks and I have not taken the time to update this blog.

Not that it matters much. Sports Nut and I spent one day sorting through boxes and stuff, but we are nowhere near a bag, box, shelf, or pile a day. Instead, we have spent a lot of time in the yard trying to whip it into some semblance of order. The garden does grow. One sample picture, taken about 3 weeks after we put our plants into the ground:

The work continues on our bathrooms, so some progress is being made towards getting out of Dodge. None of them are quite finished, however. I'd share a picture of Media Guy's bathroom, which looks the most finished, but he's already gone to bed. Smart guy.

It is my intention to post to this blog while I am in Boston. But if we win the lottery while there, the Wizard and I will be too busy shopping for a house. So.... no guarantees.
